Title: Bachelor of Science
Institution: Open University of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka

Level:

Degree.

Description:
The Programme leading to the award of the Bachelor of Science Degree is designed:

a) to enable particularly those in middle level employment in
scientific fields to obtain an academic degree and thereby improve their promotional or career redirectional prospects
b) to facilitate late developers to come back into the mainstream of formal education with a view to obtaining an academic degree c) to enable those who, for economic or other reasons were unable to avail themselves of chances and openings they had at the end of their secondary school career, to make good the loss, by obtaining an academic degree whilst being employed
d) to enable large numbers of persons to pursue a degree course in science in their own time at a considerably lower cost
e) to contribute towards raising the general educational standards of the people.

Entrance qualifications: Students will be eligible to register for courses of the Bachelor of Science Degree Programme on the acquisition of a total of 4 credits at Foundation Level. Of the 4 credits, 1 must be English (LSE 1603). Those with an educational attainment
equivalent to three passes at the GCE (Advanced level) in the required subjects will be exempted from the foundation courses and registered direct for the Degree courses. Students may also be exampted from the requirement of obtaining credits for certain other courses by virtue of equivalent qualifications.

Languages of instruction at lower levels are Sinhala, Tamil and

Languages:

English only

Media and methods employed: Printed text, audio cassettes, video cassettes.
Printed correspondence texts prepared by/for institution, laboratory work, audio cassettes, video cassettes, day schools (a minimum of 2 on each course).

Administrative information:
This is a 3 academic year (minimum) programme. Students are required to complete 6 credits, 2 each from level 3, 4 and 5.

A student who registers for a Degree Programme must register for a minimum of 1/2 credit per academic year. The maximum a student can register for in one academic year is 2 credits.

A student may not register for a course at a particular level unless a specified number of credits has been obtained at the preceding level or is exempted from the requirement of obtaining the credits by virtue of other qualifications.
